Spanish technological development of artificial intelligence applied to journalism: companies and tools for documentation, production and distribution of information

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been progressively expanding over the last decade, with its transversal application to journalistic process and engaging of media technology companies in developing specific tools services. This research offers a first catalogue Spanish technological institutions that develop AI systems applicable journalism, services features grouped into three phases process: 1. Automated gathering documentation information; 2. production content; 3. Information distribution audience relations. The uses methodology in-depth interviews 45 innovation heads Spanish-based centres specialised development (N = 25), is supported by questionnaires systematise four study categories: company profiles, tools, journalism-specific future trends. results confirm clear evolution within sector, available for whole process, mainly information content related monetisation; automated news phase thereby overshadowed. offering diversified terms formats -textual, audiovisual, sound- platforms, especially web social media. consulted testify profitability implementation note growing interest from media, but warn an uneven progress reflects “slowness”, “distrust” “lack knowledge” regarding AI.
